Joan joined the Red Rock State Park volunteer program in 1995, and quickly became active in the Park’s School Connection Program, an environmental education program for students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Joan led a team of volunteers who revamped the class curriculum to bring all subjects up to Arizona state requirements. She was named Volunteer of the Year in 2003 by Arizona State Parks. She was the Coordinator of Volunteers from 1997 until she succumbed to cancer in 2004. Joan was also a founding member of the Benefactors of Red Rock State Park and in keeping with her devotion to the causes of environmental education and nature preservation, and her efforts to provide environmental awareness in the Verde Valley area, the Benefactors of Red Rock State Park established a college scholarship fund to help selected students who have demonstrated a commitment to environmental improvement.
